Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra is an annual festival celebrated in the city of Puri in Odisha. The festival originated when Lord Jagannath’s sister, Goddess Subhadra, expressed her wish to visit Puri. To fulfill her wish, Lord Jagannath, along with his brother Lord Balabhadra set out on a Rath Yatra to Puri. Since then, the Rath Yatra is celebrated every year according to the Hindu calendar.
The Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra holds great significance in Hindu mythology and culture. It is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, who is considered the Lord of the universe and a form of Lord Krishna. The festival marks the journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra from their main temple, known as the Jagannath Temple, to the Gundicha Temple.
The procession of the deities in specially designed chariots, called Rathas, is a spectacle that attracts thousands of devotees. It is believed that participating in the Rath Yatra and pulling the chariots cleanses one’s sins and brings blessings. The festival promotes devotion, unity and spirituality among devotees.
According to the Hindu calendar, the second date of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month is starting on July 07, 2024 at 04:26 am. At the same time, this date will end on July 08, 2024 at 04:59 am. In such a situation, according to the Udaya date, the Jagannath Rath Yatra in 2024 is starting from July 07.
