Kalighat Kali Mandir is one of the oldest Hindu temples and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, the temple was built in the 19th century, although some claim that the original temple dates back to the 6th century.
The idol of the goddess in the Kalighat temple shows the head and four hands of Maa Kali. This idol is carved out of a square black stone. Here Maa Kali’s tongue is very long which is made of gold and is sticking out. The teeth are of gold. The eyes and head are made of ochre vermillion color and the tilak on the forehead is also of ochre vermillion. The hands of the idol are adorned with gold ornaments and the neck is adorned with a garland of red flowers.
